400whp Big Turbo MazdaSpeed3 from Sweden

We’ve been tuning Jonatan’s MazdaSpeed3 from Sweden for some time using VersaTuner. It has a big turbo (GT3071) on the stock motor with a host of supporting modifications. He’s currently running E85 and sitting at 21-22psi but putting down some very impressive numbers and kicking butt at the track (watch him pass the Ferrari in the video below)!

The power of E85 and a good tune

Here’s a good comparison of what can be done using tuning alone. Kyle came to us with a very lightly bolted 2011 MazdaSpeed3 with a knack for knocking so the tuning had to take this into account. This car has an intake, upgraded fuel pump, and a test pipe. That’s it! Stock downpipe, stock intercooler, stock turbo, stock motor.

The deltas (changes) in horsepower and torque is what matters here, not the absolute numbers.

Going from the COBB OTS to the Stratified gas tune, there was a 13whp gain and 27 ft lbs of torque which is very respectable given the knock limitations of the fuel..

Going from the Stratified gas tune to the E85 tune, there was a 62whp gain and another 39 ft lbs of torque

Overall, going from OTS to the finished Stratified E85 tune there was a gain of 75whp and 76 ft lbs of torque. These logs were also taken in hot weather (especially the later ones) so expect these numbers to get better as the temperatures drop. The boosted air temps in the first COBB OTS run peaked at 116* F and in the last run they peaked at 132* F. You will not see any other part you can bolt onto the motor give you a better bang for the buck.

2008 MazdaSpeed3 hits the dyno with a Stratified tune

It must be dyno season! Another one of our customers just hit the rollers with a Stratified tune. The tune was a little out of date as he’s added a front mount intercooler and downpipe since the last update but the numbers are very respectable for a K04 powered MazdaSpeed3 in the summer. This one’s a strong runner and I think with a couple’ more tweaks we’ll clear 300whp even with the summer heat! His final numbers were 294 whp and 340 ft lbs of torque at the wheels.

Just completed a tune for a customer in Ontario, Canada on his 2011 Speed3 with the following modifications:

cp-e HPFP
cp-e SRI
cp-e TIH
ETS 3.25“ intercooler
cp-e downpipe
cp-e catback exhaust
Denso ITV22 (1 step colder plugs)
Petro-Canada/Sunco  Ultra-94  (94 octane)

The customer gained ~20whp and ~35 ft lbs of torque across the board.

It is also worth noting that the original OTS plot was taken with 17 degrees F (8 degrees C) cooler boosted air temperatures compared to the Stratified final map plot. In cooler temperatures gains will be greater as the higher air density really helps out the small K04 turbo. Now that it’s summer and this customer’s BATs were peaking at 130+ degrees F, we know this car has 300whp in it during the winter with a nice fat power band.

Tuning the Mazda CX-7

We had a request come in for a custom tune for a CX-7 from Russia. This car has a built motor, Garrett GT3071R turbo, FMIC, exhaust and intake manifolds … the works.

As some of you may know the CX-7 shares the 2.3L DISI Turbo motor with the MazdaSpeed3, MazdaSpeed6, and MPS3/6 vehicles. VersaTuner offers an excellent interface for tuning the 2007-2009 CX-7 so we went to work and hope to get this Russian beast around 400whp when done. Will update later with final results.
