The stock intake path is blocked by the grill rib, air has to abruptly change direction before it makes its way to the stock inlet opening. This causes a loss in both air velocity and total pressure, you want air to remain moving fast constantly throughout the flow trajectory before entry to the airbox.

The BIG MOUTH intake allows the air to be guided through the intake path with minimal loss in total pressure and velocity, and optimum flow diffusion (expansion) from the grill area into the stock inlet path.
